Irritating cold calls...Overcoming ideas

Phone calls ... have become one of the most intimate and highly usable word in everyday life.Phone calls are seen as essential for some, and for others it enhances love and intimacy. Still annoying for some.

While some of the phone conversations we have with people who are already in contact with us are annoying, as one of you I can feel how difficult it is to make calls and talk to people we do not know and try to do what we think with them.

This post is not about how to make a phone call. This is going to be give some ideas and knowledge on how to make a “Cold Call”.

What is “Cold Calling”??

This is one of the most commonly used methods in telemarketing activities. Making a phone call to a stranger and asking them to do something we want.

Peoples who works in sales job, they may heard this term for sure.

But still cold calling would be the most irritating activity for them.

Cold calling may be to get an appointment with your client or asking someone to purchase your product or asking someone to sponsor you or anything that’s related to asking something from someone over the phone.

In day to day life, we all are sales man in whatever the ways we meet everyday. Some peoples can be passionate and can do the cold calling very easily because of the ability they got in various situations. But on the other hand, it’s very stranger and disgusting work for someone at all.

Even the second persons’ though also would be OK.we can justify the thought of the person who ignores cold calling. Asking something to do with someone is really disgusting task for me too. Now, you all can realize how hard and bored this task named Cold calling...

But, here we have some ideas to overcome the barriers when we attempt to make a “cold call“

  1. Mind it… there is no language barrier.

In Sri Lanka, there are more peoples’ languages is other than English. Although Sinhala, Tamil and many other languages are native for us, we are also forced to speak English at one point of life.

We should keep in mind that, English is not our mother tongue. Other than those who privileged to be in English speaking environment, it must have been tried.

Sometimes mistakes can happen. It's not a big deal. Most of the time the next ones will understand what we came to tell them.

Joining a toastmasters club is one of the effective way to improve your English speaking skill. It’s one of the best thing i have done in my life for the purpose of improving my English knowledge.

You can google for some toastmasters club and follow the instructions to join there.

You’ll get better and better after days.

  1. Practice..

You may heard the quote “practice make perfect”. YES, not only in this particular topic, but also everything you wish to do, you must have practice.

Here’s the way how i got improved and still getting progress in my English knowledge. My father had a tourist hotel in Arugambay. Even now it’s open there. Most of the time, foreign tourists who can speak English stays at the resort.  I visit the hotel and talk with the them in a given periodical time per day.

I meet them and I talk randomly. We can talk whatever we want ( common topic)but, we should also consider other parties’ times and privacy.

I have another idea to get practice on this criteria. You can make call to various customer service centers.it can be your mobile connection provider or bank divisions. Call them and ask stupid questions and make sure you should choose English as your preferred language.

  1. Take cold calling easy..

There’s nothing hard unless you feel it’s hard. Take cold calling easy. Make sure you’re not glitch at the moment when you doing cold calling and avoid trembling and chocking voice. Talk usually and be friendly with the end person. Also consider that, Everyone will not be friendliness with other peoples. So, don’t cross the line and do not deviate from your goal.

  1. Take a pen and paper.

I have remember, when i was teen i called a friend over the phone who’s an Australian. Actually, he is my family friend. At that point of time i was really suffered to talk in English with him. After days, I tried to take some notes before i go to make call with him. The notes mean, what i’m going to talk in this conversation. Over the time, i felt myself, i’m getting better on it and I don’t want to take that pen and paper anymore.

There’s no shame on it. The only thing you want is get things done. It doesn’t matter how you get them done. So, write down the conversation that may follow. In time to come, you may not need the paper.

  1. Know the actual decision maker.

This is one of the most important thing that every cold caller must get much knowledge.

Imagine whenever you make cold calls to a company or organization, usually you may just get speaks from the assistant managers or other executive officers.

You know how you were been prepared and skilled to deliver your ideas. But, those assistant managers and other officers don’t know what you actually intent to deliver.

In common, eventually the decisions will be made by the Marketing managers or someone who is even higher.

Suppose, the idea or your product will pitch by those assistant managers to marketing managers, there is a chance to get ignorance or dislikes to your ideas or products.

So, make sure who is the decision maker and where you want to deliver your ideas. Whenever you get missed to get answers for you calls from higher officers, you might have to give an wide explanation and information.

Ultimately everything comes down to your fear. Even if you are employed or run your own business, you may need to call strangers for various reasons. Cold calling is a great skill that you need in life. What stand amid you and your goal is fear and shy. So master it by doing what you are afraid of and keep on calling them strangers.
